What is grooming? Childhood sexual abuse happens more often than many people realize. Reports show that one in four girls and one in twenty boys are victims of sexual predators. Because many cases go unreported, the real number of victims is likely even higher. https://cpgn.org/facts-and-statistics/
So, what is grooming? The term grooming is used to describe a series of actions used by a predator to lure in their victim. This psychological tool involves the predator developing a pattern of manipulative behaviors specifically aimed at gaining the victim’s trust.
Because of this initial need for trust so that the predator can get what they want, a predator will usually choose their victims from children they have easy access to. This means the predator is often someone the family knows, like a friend or relative. The perpetrator gains their trust, making it harder for the victim, and in many cases the victim’s parents, to recognize the danger this person presents.
How Does the Groomer Succeed?
A person who grooms their victims has usually already worked their way into the victim’s inner circle and their family members. The groomer uses keen manipulative skills to gain access to what they want. They entice their victim with gifts, candy, attention, and access to activities the child desires but wouldn’t get without this person’s involvement. The groomer uses anything the child eagerly desires to create an open-door policy into their circle of trust.
To get access to what he/she wants, a groomer must also earn the trust of the victim’s parents. Once this goal is accomplished, the predator begins taking interest in the victim’s activities, education, and other areas of their life. This involvement provides the perpetrator with opportunities to spend time alone with their chosen victim.
Once time alone with the victim has been established, the groomer begins forming strong bonds with their victim while keenly planting doubt in the victim’s mind toward other family members’ motives and actions. Far too often, parents never suspect their child is at risk in the hands of this person who has worked their way into their inner circle.
Now that a solid trust bond is formed, the perpetrator moves in to establish a more physical relationship with their victim that soon develops into sexual abuse. To make sure the groomer is not found out, they will usually threaten to harm the child’s loved ones if they tell anyone about their “special games.”
The Hidden Diamond
I wrote my first book, The Hidden Diamond, based on my experiences as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. I formed my main character, Aldous, and his wife, Mariam, after the couple who lived across the street from me. This real-life predatory couple, who have long since passed, groomed my sister and me to gain our trust. Ultimately, they violated that trust.
Unfortunately, our parents not only never protected us from this couple’s actions, but they, being abusers themselves, encouraged my sister and me to keep up a relationship with them. My parents protected the perpetrators instead of their own children, claiming that the couple’s reputation and that of their own must take precedence over our safety. For more on my story, see https://crystalmmhuntley.com/2024/03/suicide-its-a-devastating-effect-of-abuse-how-to-get-help/.
After The Hidden Diamond’s release, even though I changed the names and location of the events within my novel, multiple people from my past contacted me. They recognized who the real people behind my fictional characters were and confided that they, too, had been victimized by this predatory couple.
If my parents had done their job to protect my sister and me instead of maintaining this couple’s reputation as their top priority, not only would their act have saved my sister and me from such deep-seated harm, but reporting the incident would also have saved many other children from becoming victims. When adults are aware of the occurrence of abuse but fail to report it, their apathy in action makes them abusers by default.
The Value in Reporting

A few years ago, a child whom I dearly love was molested by a trusted extended family member. I’m forever grateful that this child’s parents immediately took the correct steps to report the incident, protect their daughter from future contact with this man, and get her counseling help. Their swift actions saved their daughter from a lifetime of harmful effects caused by the abuse. And no doubt, their actions also saved other children from becoming victims of this child molester.
If you suspect a child is being abused, I urge you to speak up and become a voice for that innocent child. I list many resources for help in situations of childhood sexual abuse and other forms of abuse at https://crystalmmhuntley.com/resources/.
Long-Term Effects of Childhood Sexual Abuse
The psychological and emotional effects of childhood sexual abuse often create long-term mental health issues for the victim. Such challenges include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
These issues can manifest in ways such as:
- Nightmares
- Flashbacks
- Low self-esteem
- Hypervigilance
- Difficulty forming healthy emotional connections
The list of residual effects doesn’t end there. It can also include the following:
- Dissociation
- Abandonment issues
- Emotional instability
- Substance abuse
- Risky sexual behavior
- Self-harming
- Perfectionism
- Patterns of avoidance
- Difficulty concentrating
- Shame
- Self-hatred
Challenges like these significantly impact a person’s ability to maintain healthy relationships. The victims of early-onset trauma develop a fear of rejection and betrayal that interferes with their ability to form healthy relationships.
Such harmful effects don’t end there. They also impact the victim’s physical health. Long-term stress increases cortisol levels, putting the survivor at higher risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease or autoimmune disorders and other health problems.
These long-term effects can hinder a person’s achievements in higher education, interfere with their career, and hold them back from advancement within their workplace and other areas of their life.
The abuse survivors often battle with the feeling that they are unworthy of love, which can manifest as a self-fulfilling prophecy. I remember believing that if I had been created with worth, such horrible things never would have happened to me. If I had value, people would treat me as such. I felt certain that since I had been the victim of abuse from early on in my childhood, God must not have placed value in me. This illustrates how the abuse I suffered even tainted my relationship with my Lord and Savior.
Healing Can Happen
I have struggled for much of my life with many of these aftereffects of abuse. Yet, I’m happy to report that all the healing work I’ve done has significantly lessened my struggles. But these issues still creep in from time to time, reminding me how crucial it is to stay committed to my healing.
Even one incident of childhood sexual abuse, if left unhealed, will seep into the person’s adult life. This fact is one more reason that it’s critical to report abuse when suspected. My mother is a good example of how unhealed effects of abuse pass down to future generations. I reveal aspects of her story at https://crystalmmhuntley.com/2024/01/Sexual Abuse – Can You See the Signs? /.
Childhood sexual abuse leaves lasting psychological, emotional, and behavioral scars on its victims. Maintaining awareness and taking early intervention steps are essential to the victim’s healing. The sooner such intervention occurs, the less the scars of abuse will impact their life.
If you have been the victim of abuse or know of someone who has, it is critical to recognize the long-term, lasting impacts of abuse. This understanding can help foster compassion and empathy for yourself and others, making it easier to establish a healthy support system for healing.
